| Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park |
Skookumchuck Narrows tidal water is forced through the narrows and forms the Sechelt Rapids.
The difference in water levels between one side of the rapids and the
other sometimes exceeds 2 meters in height. Current speeds can exceed
30km/hr! The rapids are famous for their spectacular whirlpools and
white-water. This geographic phenomenon is one of the major attractions
on the Sunshine Coast. To reach the rapids, you will need to walk an
easy 4km trail past Brown Lake and through a lush coastal forest. The
first kilometre is along a side road, the last 3 kilometres is along a
well-developed trail. There is minimal elevation change and hiking time
will be about one hour for most groups. There are three viewing points
to enjoy the fascinating rapids, perfect spots for a picnic. Remember
to start your hike before the viewing time shown. Please ask for the
viewing timetables. |
